Your bathroom can take quite the beating over the weekend. Dedicating Monday to cleaning and disinfecting this space is a great way to catch up for the week ahead. Bacteria, viruses, and other germs can build up in your bathroom if not cleaned regularly. Wiping down your shower/tub, sink, toilet, and other surfaces once a week should suffice. Cleaning your shower while you are taking one is a great cleaning hack for busy individuals.
Kitchens have many areas that need to be cleaned regularly. Wiping down counters, sweeping or mopping, and cleaning any dirty dishes from the week should be your first priority. If you attempt to clean your entire house in one day, you can easily miss surfaces like the insides of appliances. Cleaning areas where you store food, like your fridge and cabinets, can prevent mold and bacteria from forming. You may also find expired food that needs to be thrown out! You should be cleaning your kitchen so thoroughly that you could eat off the floor! (But we don’t recommend this.)
For those of us with busy lives, dust, pet hair, and food remnants can easily sneak into our living spaces over the week. Cleaning the living room and dining room midweek is an easy way to refresh your space. Weekends and after-school activities mean children and teens can make these spaces a mess. Get them involved by turning cleaning into a game! Challenge them to certain tasks, such as picking up toys or folding blankets. You can see who can complete their list first, or play a game of “beat the clock”. By the time you’ve finished cleaning and setting the dinner table, these spaces will be ready for the weekend.
Commonly touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, electronics, and drawers all need to be wiped down at least once a week. Germs can build up on these surfaces throughout the week and lead to illness. It can be easy to forget this step when cleaning your home, so devoting one day to this task can be a sufficient cleaning hack. If you want to be more prudent in preventing bacteria on these surfaces, wiping down the areas two to three times per week would be powerful against viruses lingering around. Children are more susceptible to getting sick, so it does not hurt to have one day to solely clean everything that children touch daily.
Kids’ rooms and areas where pets frequent can get messy quickly. Odor, bacteria, or mold can easily spread to other areas of the house if not cleaned regularly. Vacuuming, dusting, and picking up clutter each week will allow these areas to stay tidy. You’ll want to stay on top of these tasks as stains and dirty carpets will become permanent if they are left untreated. Make Friday your day for these spaces when kids are out of the house for the evening/weekend. Your entire family will appreciate having clutter-free (and pet-hair free!) rooms going into the weekend.
Cleaning bedrooms on Saturday can be an efficient home cleaning routine. Speed up the process by getting family involved if there are multiple bedrooms in your house. Since Sundays are for laundry and changing sheets, picking up clutter and vacuuming carpets on Saturday is a great way to break up your weekend chores. Cleaning under beds, in closets, and inside of drawers are also important and can be easily forgotten if you’re cleaning multiple rooms. After all, the little things can be “out of sight, out of mind” when you’re tackling the whole house! Trying to tackle your entire bedroom (including laundry) in one day can be overwhelming. Split these tasks into two days to break up the monotony.
